Pinning a water-filled mineral channel helped separate similar rare-earth ions

Magnesium held a hydrated manganese-oxide gap near the width of a lanthanide ion's water shell and improved selected pairwise enrichment in laboratory tests. The demonstrated work used millilitres of solution and milligrams of material; flow operation, long cycle life and commercial environmental performance remain unproven.
